Memorial fund honouring Suki Binjal to be set up to help young aspiring lawyers overcome social barriers

A fund is to be established in memory of Suki Binjal to aid aspiring young lawyers who need help to overcome social barriers to their progression.

Tributes poured in after Binjal, a former president of LLG (Lawyers in Local Government), died in October.

A crowdfunding page on Just Giving has been set up by Mark Greenburgh, Binjal’s husband Paul and LLG to establish the proposed memorial fund.

The page says: “In her life Suki achieved so much; qualifying as a solicitor, becoming Head of Legal Services, being a Director of Law and Governance, being elected to represent the profession on the Council of the Law Society, serving as President of Lawyers in Local Government, and advising the Secretary of State as a Best Value Inspector.

“Suki was never afraid to take on the biggest and toughest assignments - serving as City Solicitor in Birmingham, leading the renewal of Northumberland and recently as part of the Team sent by Government to Tower Hamlets. For her, there was no such thing as a glass ceiling.”

It adds: “Suki always wanted to nurture young aspiring lawyers to achieve their best, to imagine the unimaginable, and believe in themselves. To honour her contribution to local government, and in collaboration with her husband, Paul, family, and colleagues at LLG, we would like to establish a fund to produce an annual award/prize to be presented at an LLG Event - such as the Annual Awards Dinner. The bursary` would be awarded to a young lawyer who needs a little help to overcome social barriers to their progression.”

The crowdfunding page says an initial amount of £5,000 is being sought to get the fund established, and LLG had offered to help with the administration.

“For those looking to mark their respect for Suki and support all that she stood for, here's a way to help continue the change she led in life,” it adds.
